A Review Like None Other
Hal Duncan has posted a great (let's call it a) review of the new movie version of Beowulf. It's as long as one would expect from a (all-too rare) Hal Duncan blog post and as fookin' funny.
Enter into Neth Space and you will find thoughts and reviews of books and other media that fit the general definition of speculative fiction. This includes the various genres and sub-genres of fantasy, science fiction, epic fantasy, high fantasy, hard sci-fi, soft sci-fi, new weird, magical realism, cyberpunk, urban fantasy, slipstream, horror, alternative history, SF noir, etc. Thoughts are my own, I'm certainly not a professional, just an avid reader avoiding his day job.

That review was indeed hilarious. I saw this in free sneak preview fashion and didn't see a need to do a review. From a 3-D standpoint it was thrilling, eye-popping, and audience-engaging. It was so much fun to be in a movie that the audience cheered in so much...but it was all about the effects not the story...cuz there wasn't much of a story to be honest with you. I thought the animation looked mostly great, but I just wasn't engaged with any of the characters. And after spending time rewatching LOTR for the umpteenth time this fell even more flat for me than it might have had I not just indulged myself in some of my favorite movies. If you see it, it has to be in 3-D. If you miss it, it really isn't a big loss.
thanks Carl (nice to see around again BTW).
The movie looks interesting and the geek in me almost feels compelled to see it. But again, it doesn't sound like it was done as good as it could have been - as with most movies these days it seems to be the video game version.
'video game version' is an apt description. Its good to be back!
